Country Living In The Knockoff Dollhouse

I have recently started picking up Country Living Magazine. I was originally prompted to do so by a friend who saw a room in the magazine that reminded them of my Happy Holidays 2011 setup. I've always overlooked Country Living Magazine for Dwell, Living Etc., Modernism, Atomic Ranch, etc., etc. Oh! And let me pour out a sip for the dearly departed Metropolitan Home Magazine. You left us in 2009, but I have not forgotten you!

Okay--anyway, I've been impressed with the modern style often found within the pages of Country Living. You can guess that it speaks to my issues with modern farmhouse and vintage design. I've been pleasantly surprised and delighted by some of the great designs and new products featured in the publication. Sure, we all know I don't do the crafts highlighted each month, but I did actually cut out a recipe for some country style grub. In your face, naysayers! Smiles. All in all, the only bad thing about the magazine so far is that it is heavily sprinkled with drug ads--complete with a manuscript of side effects. It's jarring, but I understand that they have to pay the bills. So if you haven't given this magazine the time of day, I recommend taking a peek at it. It's totally Etsy, crafting, modern living, sustainable, green, vintage, upcycled hipster, trendsetting, laid-back farmer cool...um, if that is a thing. Their latest issue is a tribute to the color white. I was inspired by the African feather headdress in Thea Beasley's office space for this scene. I moved on from there. You'll notice that I couldn't decide which kind of lighting I wanted...so I used them all.

  2. Hey, I really miss Met Home. That one was my absolute favorite. Glad I still have a few issues of it saved. I love it. Very rich layering of color...some many hues of white. Hey, I like your interpretation for a mini version of an African headdress. (I'd also been sourcing something for a headdress.) I love the way you bring in a more is more look but still keep it all so modern.

    1. Thanks Studioseven,
Yes, Met Home! That was my jam. I didn't even know they were having trouble. It was a huge surprise when I discovered they were no longer publishing. I used to try to find chrysanthemums to use as a headdress on the walls but they were always too big. Hommies who work the 1:6 can probably use them for the effect. I think if you could find the right size, it would be amazing.

    1. Whoa Neen,
I'm so not worthy. I wish I had the "great decorating" skills. If you saw my home, you'd be like "what happened?". ha ha! Thank you! I need to experiment more with designs though.

  4. I love this...country is not what comes to mind when I see it. It just looks comfortable. I remember when Metropolitan home was discontinued...I miss it too!

    1. What up, Mad For Mod!
I have found that many of the interior designs featured in Country Living do not say "country" to me. I always associate the term with horrible wallpaper, woods with ugly grain and boring furniture with ugly print. It's been surprising to see modern lines in the mag. However, I'm glad this room does not say "country" to you--ha ha!I can't shake the stigma.

  5. You captured it. I like Shabby Chic myself, as my chic gets shabbier naturally. Works for me... CM

Ahh---it is a bit shabby chic here. I hadn't thought about it. And, yes, Lordy my chic is also shabbier---ugh, and flabbier. Ha ha!

    1. Hey Minis-B!
This is by far one of the most awesome compliments. Ha ha! I kind of want to put it on a business card = Mini Modern: combining stuff, things, what nots and more stuff. It's a perfect description of what I'm doing here. Not real sure about the "gifted" part but I'm definitely all what nots and stuff, my friend. I love that! Ha!

    1. Oh! That is right = MetHome did have floorplans.I wish other mags would give us more of that deliciousness. Thank you, Penelope. The cat condo sort of just happened. When I purchased that mini salt pig, I was thinking "fireplace". Ha!

  8. If this is country I'm going to have buy a white cowboy hat. Man this is so cool. You have a way of making anything look good. Country/Shabby Chic/Modern, yep it all works. I tip my hat to you. Met Home was great, such a loss. :( Luckily you can still find copies on auction sites.

    1. Yee Haw! Ha ha---yeah, this is the kind of cool I see in that magazine. It's surprising and I feel kinda bad for putting a stigma on it. "Country" style is actually cool mixed with modern design. Ahh--Lord knows I do not need any more magazines. I just cleaned out about 10 years of Dwell magazines from my shelves = keeping a few prized issues, but cutting out images to use as art in future small scale endeavors. Thanks Mini Dork--hey, we need another Bay Area meet up.
